Pupils to paint colourful themes on carriages
Lively, colourful South Island themes will be painted by pupils of six Christchurch secondary schools on railway carriages this week-end. The three carriages, being used by South Island promotion groups, are part of the Holidaymaker Train which will tour 12 North Island cities for two weeks in AprilMay. National organisers of the promotional train, the Trourist Industry Federation, hope that more than 40,000 people will visit the train.
The South Island Promotion Association co-or-dinated the participation of the Christchurch
schools in the project The Canterbury Promotion Council has booked one carriage which is being painted by pupils of Christ’s College and Cashmere High School.
Ms Jan Atkinson, marketing officer for the Canterbury Promotion Council, said that the paintings would reflect what was happening in the carriages.
“Our carriage will be decorated with Griz Wyllie, the Wizard, ski-ing, and red and black,” she said.
The Dunedin-Wanaka carriage will be painted by pupils of Rangi Ruru Girls’ School and Christ-
church Boys’ High School. St Andrew’s College and Shirley Boys’ High School pupils will paint the Southland-Queenstown carriage. South Island Youth Hostels and the Nelson province will, be promoted in one of the other six carriages being painted in Wellington. The carriage designs will be judged by a guest panel including the Minister of Tourism, Mr Moore, in Wellington on April 26, the day the train’s journey will begin.
The school with the winning design will win $5OO and a Railways day trip.
