Allegiance
Sir,—New Zealand citizens employed at the Harewood Deep Freeze base must swear to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies ...” and to “bear true faith and allegiance to the same ...” In other words, New Zealanders, owing allegiance to our Queen and country, must swear allegiance to a foreign country. I
am surprised that any Government could tolerate such loyalty to a foreign power. May I ask the Prime Minister if the S.I.S. is investigating this clear example of subversion? Does he or Mr Bolger favour the establishment of a “fifth column” of New Zealanders? If the Deep Freeze base is really just for peaceful Antarctic purposes, why must any humble local forklift driver swear allegiance to an alien Government? United States citizens may lose their nationality if they make a declaration of allegiance to a foreign State. So should it be here. — Yours, etc., (Miss) L. T. TAYLOR. March 7, 1987.
[The Prime Minister replies: “Your correspondent is mistaken. New Zealanders working for Operation Deep Freeze are not required to swear allegiance to the United States, as your correspondent suggests.”]
