The New Zealand Industrial Design Council is a Government and indus-try-sponsored body whose prime role is to promote and encourage excellence in industrial design. It provides a range of services to manufacturers that leads to Improving product function, appearance and quality. The council assists by providing design advice to manufacturers, publishing information on design, promoting outstanding New Zealand design and achievements, encouraging design education, and presenting awards. Designmark is the basic award granted to products which successfully meet the evaluation criteria. Manufacturers can apply for this if the product is completed or still in a “concept” or “prototype” form.
At that stage, council
staff can provide the manufacturer with critical guidance that can help achieve a better product and a Designmark Award.
The New Zealand Industrial Design council Design Award is reserved for products that are truly outstanding and innovative, and which have already received the Designmark Award. Products must also have a high degree of New Zealand content.
Judging criteria are stricter with this award, and assessments are made by a panel of both council members and independent industrial designers. The Prince Philip Award is the premier design award which is open only to products which have already achieved the New Zealand Industrial Design Award. This award recognises the most outstanding New Zealand designs and Prince Philip is involved in the final selection of the winner from six finalists. It particularly recognises the designer or the design team, and has attached to it a $5OOO study grant for the winner.
