Canoeists warned

PA Greymouth The West Coast marathon canoeist, Paul Caffyn, and bis companion, Ron Allnatt, have been threatened with a $2OOO fine, or two years jail, if they attempt their planned crossing of the Tasman Sea in a kayak. Caffyn said from Hobart yesterday that tbe Harbour Board of Hobart had issued a detention notice on the kayak. “If we have a crack at making the trip they have threatened us with

a $2OOO fine, or two years jail,” he said. Caffyn and Allnatt are seeking legal advice over what Caffyn has classed “as a blatant breach of natural justice, in that the Harbourmaster prejudged the seaworthiness of the kayak after watching a news item on television.” Caffyn said that he and Allnatt were getting plenty of support from other sea canoeists in Hobart. “If the weather is right tomorrow we are still going to go,” Caffyn said.
