The resource co-ordi-nator with “The Press” Newspapers in Education department, Ms Coral Broadbent, prepares “The Press” stall for the Careers Expo 87 exhibition to begin today at Canterbury Court next to the Addington Show Grounds. The three-day exhibition, organised mainly for the benefit of secondary school pupils, will be open to the public on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. It Is sponsored by the Christchurch City Council, the Christchurch Transition Committee, and the Employment Resource
Centre, and aims to expose pupils to a wide range of career opportunities and provide more specific information.
“The Press” stall is part of the effort by N.I.E. to help pupils become more aware of careers offered in journalism and other news-paper-related careers. Sixth-formers studying the journalism module would, find the. stall. of particular interest, said : Ms Broadbent. '
“We plan to follow up on this stall with a careers page in ‘The
Press’ on a Monday,” she said. “We will also follow up on the careers expo with an ‘Expressions’ feature on students’ responses to the expo next Thursday.” Forty-six commerical and educational groups have prepared stalls. They include model agencies, funeral directors, architects, manufacturers, Corso, the Army, and the Human Rights Commission.
About 6809 of the 10,000 secondary school pupils in Christchurch were expected to attend as well as pupils from outlying areas, said the co-ordina-
tor at the Resource Centre, Mr Andrew MacGregor. “Young people need to be aware of the range of local employment available, what people in the work actually do, and of what resources are available to them to help find work,” Mr MacGregor said. •' ■
An entry fee of $1 will be charged adults on Saturday.
