Development grants to Bays area

Grants of $221,200 were approved last year for the Nelson Bays region under the Regional Development Investigation " Grant Scheme, the Nelson Bays Regional Development Council has announced. Under the new scheme, which began in April last year, 31 grants ranging from $413 to $42,500 (at an average of $7135) were approved, said the council.

The new scheme extended the availability of grant assistance — designed to help fund feasibility studies into new businesses — from the Golden Bay district to the whole of the region. Executive secretary, Mr David Kiddey, said the council was now receiving more applications from areas outside Golden Bay. Some of these were for major studies. Among ap-

plications lodged recently were three seeking grants of $170,000, $117,000 and $99,000.

Mr Kiddey said the response to the scheme in Nelson had been better than in any other region in New Zealand and the council had been very encouraged by the number of applications and the diversity of business activities they represented.
