Works site for use as sewerage plant?

The Picton Borough Council is considering use of the old Waitaki freezing works site for an alternative sewage treatment plant. Negotiations will be entered into with the company and the Marlborough Harbour Board, another possible buyer, before a feasibility study on the proposal is commissioned. The original recommendation of the works committee was that a firm of consultants be engaged first to conduct the study at an estimated cost of $7500. Cr G. S. Baxter said at a

meeting of the council on Tuesday evening that it should do its homework first and find out what the site and buildings would cost. Negotiations with the company and discussions with the board would cost nothing. Cr J. H. Cornelius said the council could waste its $7500 if it did not secure the purchase or an option. The town clerk, Mr B. W. Tapp, confirmed that the board is still negotiating with the company. The council decided to make provision in estimates for $7500 to fund a feasibility study. It is known that there is

considerable general interest in the site by other parties.

The site is considered suitable for sewage treatment, possible relocation of the council’s works depot or other industry suitable to the zoning. Purchase of the site would enable the council to acquire the water supply agreement for the works and consolidate the future of the . borough’s water supply. - - The committee chairman, Cr N. W.
