Champion warms up in chess

NZPA Sydney New Zealand chess champion Russell Dive wanned up for the Asian championships in Jakarta next month by playing 18 opponents simultaneously at Chatswood Chess Club in Sydney. When a halt was called to the challenge at 2 a.m. — after more than six hours of competition — the 20-year-old student had won 11 games, drawn three and lost two. Two games were unfinished. Club spokesman John de Boer said Dive built up highquality games on all boards and played steadily and solidly. Some of the games went to 40 moves. Dive, an accountancy student at Wellington’s Victoria University, said he was “hot and tired” after the simul. It was his first taste of overseas competition and only his third simultaneous challenge — he played two in Wellington last week. He leaves for Jakarta this weekend.
