Solo yacht race

NZPA-AAP Sydney The French solo yachtsman, Philippe Jeantot, sailed his 18 metre cutter Credit Agricole HI into Rio de Janeiro yesterday to win the third leg of the 8.0. C. Challenge solo round-the-world yacht race. Jeantot shattered his own record for the course from Sydney around Cape Horn to Rio by 11 days and four hours.

The Frenchman set the previous record while winning the 1982-83 8.0. C. Challenge. He sailed the 8300 nautical mile leg in a remarkable 36 days 17 hours 46 minutes and

53 seconds, averaging 216 miles a day. The 8.0. C. Challenge fleet left Sydney on January 18 on the gruelling southern ocean leg.

A fellow Frenchman, Titouan Lamazou, aboard Ecureuil D’aquitaine, who won the second leg of the race from Capetown to Sydney, finished only hours behind Jeantot

The two had pushed each other continuously during the race never being more than 120 miles apart. ; The fourth leg from Rio to Newport, Rhode Island, is due to start on April 11 after a well-earned fest for the 16 remaining competitors.
