Hornby to meet Sumner in final
Hornby and Sumner will meet in the final of the Christchurch Suburban oneday knock-out cricket competition after winning their semi-finals on Sunday. Merivale-Papanui elected to bat against Sumner at St Leonards Square. At 92 for two, Merivale was in a strong position, but the last eight wickets tumbled for a mere 36 runs. Kevin Collins compiled a fine 75, with 62 runs coming from boundaries. Sumner’s opening bowlers lacked penetration and it was Owen Southen and Dave Boreham, bowling good line and length, who captured six wickets between them. Sumner overtook Merivale’s total with 10 overs remaining and two wickets standing. The eighth wicket fell at 97, but Boreham and Grant Carr stayed together to score the winning runs. A fourth grade player, Craig Courtis, took four wickets for Merivale and deservedly received the “player of the match” award. Phil Rodley also took four
wickets. Hornby, put in to bat at Denton Park, reached 160 for six off 40 overs. Robert Wilson (52 not out), Ross Morgan and Barry Adam contributing useful scores. Boon Hay failed dismally, replying with 68. Murray Emerson, the Hoon Hay captain, was the only batsman to make double figures. Mike Pannell had outstanding figures for Homby. He finished with three wickets for five runs from eight overs. Sumner 131/8 (O. Southen 29, D. Boreham 22 n. 0., R. Campbell 21; R. Rodley 4/30, C. Courtis 4/33) beat Meri-vale-Papanui 128 (K. Collins 75; Southen 3/20, Boreham 3/ 24). Umpires: A. W. Blackburn and D. S. Gray. Player of match: Courtis. Hornby 160/6 (R. Wilson 52 n. 0., R. Morgan 27, B. Adam 26; S. Frew 2/19) beat Hoon Hay 68 (M. Pannell 3/5, Adam 2/14). Umpire: G. A. Clark. Player of the match: Adam.
