Index sums thwarted

PA Wellington Wide spreads in the major currencies and a general lack of business prevented the Reserve Bank from calculating its trade-weighted index for 9 a.m. yesterday. A Reserve Bank spokesman said the wider than usual spreads were the result of the G-5 meeting of finance ministers and central bank governors in Paris.

But the bank expected to calculate its 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. index, as usual. The index measures the kiwi against the currencies of New Zealand’s main trading partners.
