Waitikiri women more than a match
By
BOB SCHUMACHER
Although held to draws by Christchurch and Juniors in the final two rounds, Waitikiri retained its Canterbury women’s match-play teams’ golf title at McLeans Island yesterday. Waitikiri won by a point from Russley, which tied with Country then beat Christchurch yesterday, with Juniors performing outstandingly well to take third only a point behind Russley. While no positive results came from the Waitikiri top order yesterday, its bottom pair, Bev Craigie and Pam Anderson, kept their club’s flag flying. Both won their two matches to give them the perfect score of five in the series. Also unbeaten in the five rounds was Canterbury’s No. 1, Liz Douglas, of Christchurch. Annette King and Dot Manley both had three wins and a half for Russley as did the Juniors No. 1, Rachel Buxton. For Country, Rosie Lee recorded a win and three halves at'No. 3, and Kerrin Starf 'carded
three wins in the bottom spot for Juniors. Douglas was in danger of losing her unbeaten record to the Russley No. 1, Jeannette Ross, in the last round. It was an absorbing match, all square at the turn, Ross 2 up after 12, all square again at the fourteenth. Ross holed a very good putt for her par and a half at 15, and she received a let-off at 16 when Douglas threeputted. At 17 Douglas played a great tee shot on the wind-swept par-3. Although she lipped out with her birdie putt, the par was good enough to win the hole. She wrapped up the match at the last with a birdie after chipping to 2m from 60m out. In the morning round, Ross had lost her unbeaten record to Moana Pollock (Country). Pollock putted a little better and Ross paid the penalty for missing too many greens. Buxton highlighted her final game against Christine Skinner (Waitikiri) by chipping in on the last hole for a birdie and a 1 up win. Final points:—Waitikiri
