Southern drivers dominate

Invercargill drivers dominated the major placings at the two-day Charisma Waterbeds national jet boat sprint championship which finished on the Waimakariri River yesterday. Morrell McKenzie won the title narrowly from another Invercargill entrant, Frazer Hamilton, in 56.085. The world marathon champion, Ken Macdonald, was third in 57.355, .40s behind Hamilton. Rodney Pohia, also of Christchurch, finished fourth, with a 57.29 s final run.

Both McKenzie and Hamilton used the same Mackraft boat in the final, which was powered by a Hamilton unit. Hamilton, who only started jet sprinting before Christmas, was the top qualifier on Saturday from 100 entrants. Yesterday morning the quickest 32 boats took part in an elimination series with McKenzie recording the fastest lap, 55.145.
