Freedom in education

Sir,—Ruth Richardson (February 12) is right in her assertion of the denial of democracy due to the power vested in a central education authority; also that parents have no choice between a State and Steiner education. I am spokesperson for a group of parents who withdrew their chil-

dren from the Steiner School and who now wish their children to receive a Steiner education in the State system. We find that the Canterbury Education Board and Department of Education in Christchurch have acted with speed and efficiency, are supportive and listen to parents’ wishes. Once the proposals reach Wellington the first reply, as expected, is negative; contact that is essential if local preference is to be heard, never mind acted upon, is lost. Presumably, in time, sufficient political pressure will produce the desired results and influence what are highly paid public servants to act in accordance with parents’ wishes. — Yours, etc., DAVID MOLLET.
