Red Cross relief fund depleted

PA Wellington The New Zealand Red Cross Society says its disaster relief fund is depleted and funding is not expected until after the annual appeal in April. The information officer, Ms Nancy Sherwood, said the lack of funds meant the society could no longer respond quickly to emergency situations. Disaster relief money had been spent on victims of Cyclone Uma at Vanuatu and on the 2000 left homeless by an earthquake in northern- New i Guinea, in recent weeks. The Red Cross wants to send 400 four-person tents, 800 jerry cans, and other items to Papua New Guinea but the limited funds make this unlikely. Ms Sherwood said public donations to the fund were needed and cheques could be sent to local centres or to national headquarters in Wellington.
