Worse in north
Sir, —Newspaper headlines are said to have a subtle effect on public opinion. “Winter war
better for south,” says in “The Press” headline (January 30), over a report from the Science Congress in Palmerston North to the effect that populations would take longer to starve to death in the Southern Hemisphere than in the. Northern if the threatened nuclear holocaust took place in the northern winter. “Good, better, best”; “bad, worse, worst,” are the correct orders for- comparative adjectives in the English language, so your headline-writer is implying a comparison with something that would be “good.” One hopes that his understanding of the totally devastating effects of nuclear war is not worse than his understanding of English.— Yours, etc.,
H. C. EVISON. January 30, 1987.
