Podocarp forest
Sir,—l support the residents at Terako Downs (January 29). If not for the protest of a handful of residents, logging of almost the last per cent of podocarp forest remaining in Canterbury would have proceeded. So who is accountable for land management? What good is all the research by scientists if no notice is. taken of their findings by landowners? And, if the D.S.I.R. manages to get a look at the land, will our unique natural heritage prevail? Or will it once again be “land development at any cost?” I recommend Dr M. R. Rudge’s presidential address in the “N.Z. Journal of Ecology”: “Science, land management and accountability.” — Yours, etc.,
