Milling on Coast

Sir,—ln 1979 the Officials Committee on West Coast Reserves, after very full inquiry and public participatidn, made its report and West Coast local authorities and people accepted the recommendation that 90,000 ha be added to West Coast reserves. The brief was to make final recommendations and, on this ground, the solution was accepted. At that stage 14 per cent of West Coast land area was available for production of timber. The Blakeley "accord” reduces this area to 5 per cent, and the director of the joint campaign asks us to believe that this reduction has made jobs and industry secure. The truth is that these things should never have been in doubt, and that the “accord” is incompatible with the West Coast regional plan. The very serious question facing us is whether we are governed by law or by political expediency. — Yours, etc., J. R. O’REGAN. January 30, 1987.
