Softballers triumph
. Canterbury had two thoroughly convincing wins when the national under-16 girls softball tournament began at Taumaranui yesterday. In stifling heat Canterbury beat Waikato, 14-2, in the morning game and then swamped Taumaranui, 14-3, in the afternoon. Both victories were achieved within six innings. Against Waikato Canterbury began aggressively with eight runs in the first innings, including homers by Sharon Patu. Trish Tallet and Joanne
McNichol. It scored two more runs in the fourth innings and four in the sixth. Both Waikato’s runs were scored on errors.
■ The big win against Taumarunui was marked by excellent batting with Patu smashing two more home runs and great pitching by Rachel Tibble who conceded only two hits.
In the revised tournament draw Canterbury will be matched against Hawke’s Bay and Hutt Valley today.
