Poole up to task

A total of 35 teams have qualified in the Canterbury New Year triples bowls tournament Just about all the favoured teams came through, although some of them had to wait until the last of the eight rounds yesterday before they had the required five wins. Neville Poole (Sumner), who won the Christmas fours last week, was in this category. He was equal to the task of beating the defending champion, Merv Robinson (Barrington), in the last round. i

Robinson, who had already qualified, held Poole for the first eight ends, but then Poole, helped greatly by a five, gained his winning break. The final score was 19-8.

Spreydon and Fendalton teams had some anxious moments before they earned the right to continue today. The Fendalton skips, Ron Dorman and Walter Hadlee, had to work hard for their last-round fifth wins, as also did Alan Briden, Ron Matheson and Bob Cullen, all of Spreydon.

Two very long last round games were at'Spreydon. In one. Bill Bodger (New Brighton), whose qualifying chances had long gone, beat the 1984 winner, Noel A’Court (Canterbury), 18-16, and Arnold • Memory . (Woolston WJd.C), who had qualified on Sunday, beat Murray Hibbard (Papanui), 18-12. A’Court and Hibbard were both looking for their fifth win.

Play today in the event, which is being sponsored by New Zealand Wine and Spirits, will be at the Barrington, Kaiapoi and Riccarton W.M.C. greens.

For the four teams left tonight there will be a trip in the country tomorrow. For the first time a centre tournament will be finalised on a country green. The club being accorded the distinction is Leeston.

Today’s post-section draw is.—
