New Brighton carnival off

A lack of sponsorship has forced the New Brighton District Business Association to cancel the carnival it had planned for January. The association had planned a three-day carnival beginning on January 8 with a surf livesaving day on January 10. Mrs Jeanette Hoogerwerf, the association’s secretary, said the association had not been able to find the $5OOO needed for the surf day. The Canterbury Surf Dife-saving Association

had been invited to take part to raise money for its clubs. To attract the clubs the association had intended to put up about $5OOO in prizes. If the carnival had gone ahead there would also have been advertising and promotion costs. The association will now plan a carnival for February, 1988, when the New Brighton Mall will mark its tenth anniversary.

Mrs Hoogerwerf thought sponsorship might be easier to get for that anniversary. >
