Molesworth

Sir,—The whole debate about the future of the Molesworth Station really reflects the different values we hold about land. Those who feel that it would best be managed by Landcorp, whose primary aim is economic efficiency, see the land as something to be used to man’s short-term gain. Those who believe it would be better placed under the stewardship of the Department of Conservation look to the wider .values of the land —physical, biological and spiritual — and recognise that in order to protect these long term values we must resist the temptation to maximise dollar returns. Conservation means careful management; it means using some resources sparingly so that they will be available for future generations. One such resource is the high country and its tussock grasslands. I fear that managers whose success is measured on a financial balance-sheet are not the best for Molesworth. The Department of Conservation is. — Yours, etc., M. MEADE. December 17, 1986.
