Edgeware, Barrington on top

Edgeware and Barrington still head the men’s and women’s points tables respectively after the third round of the B.N.Z. senior inter-club tennis competition at Wilding Park yesterday. Even though there were no major upsets in the men’s competition, several matches provided plenty of excitement. Probably the closest match was between Shirley’s Brett Hibbert and Te Kura’s Hugh Robinson. Hibbert fought well to gain a handy two-break lead in the first set, taking the set out at 6-4. Robinson narrowly won the second in a tense tiebreaker which he won, 7-5. The third set was extremely close until 3-3 when a ball was lost over the fence. After this break, Hibbert took advantage of the new balls and broke serve, winning the deciding set, 6-4. In another cliffhanger, Elmwood’s Rhett Mason fought off a spirited attack from Vernon Aubrey, of Avonhead, and came back from being a match point down in the second set tiebreaker to clinch the decider, 6-4.

Jean-Pierre Andre, at No. 3 for Elmwood, fought equally well to stave off defeat from

Avonhead’s talented youngster, Alistair Hunt. Hunt, who turns 14 tomorrow, won the first set, 6-2, and led, 4-2, in the third, but a determined Andre levelled the score, 4-4, and took the confidence to take the final two games and the match. The men’s "Player of the Day” was Brendan Furness, who showed great stamina and potential in narrowly losing to the highly ranked Ralph Webster. In the women’s section, the newly-promoted Avonside continued its winning form by downing Elmwood in a clearcut encounter. Jean Macdonald displayed great tenacity to overcome Elmwood’s hard-hitting Karen Mellish after being down a set. Fendalton only just managed to beat United on a countback of games in their contest. The women’s “Player of the Day” award went to Shirley’s Sally Moorfield, whose deft placement and concentration gained her a relatively straightforward 6-2, 6-0 win over Barrington’s Robyn Hunt.
