Regatta umpires view from bank
Umpires had a somewhat different view of the races than usual when the first regatta of the Canterbury Rowing Association’s 1986-87 pennant series was held at Kerrs Reach at the weekend.
Instead of following the crew in speedboats the umpires watched from fixed points on the bank. A rowing official said that the reasons for the change were the cost of fuel and wear and tear on outboard motors. "It worked out pretty well,” he said. The regatta was marked by good, close racing. Some of the less-experienced crews had a little difficulty in starting because of the wind. A new points system operated with petite finals held where there were more than five entries for a race. Points were awarded on a 5,4,3,2,1 basis.
Because of a dispute over points the outcome of the
regatta will not be confirmed until the C.R.A. meeting tomorrow night. But Avon dominated the men’s events and Canterbury the women’s events. Avon provided all three finalists in the men’s novice eight. Results of finals:— Men Novice four.— Avon No. 1, 7:41.8, 1; Canterbury No. 2, 7:44.1, 2; Avon No. 3, 8:06.2, 3.
