Indoor bowls champions to meet
The national final of the New Zealand Indoor Bowls Federation’s champion-of-champion singles will be held at Kearney’s Road hall on Saturday. Among the top contenders is Keith Waghorn (King Country) who won the title in 1980 and was runner-up in 1981. Waghorn was also runner-up in the singles in the national championships at Palmerston North this year. Poverty Bay’s well performed Arnold Hutchins, who has held three national titles — the mixed fours in 1977, the fours in 1976, and the pairs in 1983 — and Kevin Whitehead (North Shore), winner of the national pairs in 1984, and as North Island representative in 1985 are expected to do well. Warren Fisher (Wairarapa) has the distinction of having won his district champion-of-champion singles title five times but on each occasion he has been unsuccessful at national level. His best result was at last year’s final, when he reached the quarter finals. Players who have come through the junior ranks to this year’s champion-of-champion singles final include Andrew Curtain (Canterbury), Peter Upston (Counties), and Robert Wilson (South Otago). Andrew Little and Bevan Pinnell, of Garden City, beat a Windsor pair. Bob Hartwell and Phillip Carrington, to win the Osborne Cup indoor bowls pairs trophy at the Kearneys Road hall during the weekend. On the eighth end, Little
held a slender 6-5 lead, but more consistent scoring on the next four ends gave him a convincing 15-5 victory. Both semi-finals were won by a solitary point. Results.— Eight mats: G. Adam 9, B.
