De Groot unbeaten
PA Hamilton New Zealand’s top two snooker representatives for next month’s world championships kept their unbeaten records intact on the second day of the Lion Brown national championships in Hamilton. Canterbury’s Peter de Groot, who earned his place in the NZ team for the Invercargill world championships by winning the national title last year, maintained his lead in section one with two more wins. He will be joined at the world championships by the player he beat in last year’s final, Harry Haenga (Wellington) who also made it four wins out of four in section two. The third member of the New Zealand team, the young Otago player, Roy Young, picked up two wins to be handily placed in section
three behind the unbeaten Waikato player, Peter Hourigan. Other unbeaten players in section play were Barry Moore (Auckland), Dave Meredith (Canterbury), Brian Kirkness (Canterbury), Tony Gorton (Counties), Frank Paul (Hawke’s Bay) and Winston Hill (Waikato). Gorton caused the upset of the tournament when he beat the previously unbeaten Steve Robertson, of Wellington, 3-2, after trailing 0-2. Results:— D. Witehir (Otago) beat B. Erickson (8.0. P. 3-1, D.
