Pastoral leases
Sir, — The administration of South Island high-country leashold land is anything but a “simple” issue. In an attempt to settle a grievance which has “festered” for 138 years (“The Press,” July 23) the Ngaitahu Maori Trust Board lays claim under the Treaty of Waitangi to a substantial part of the South Island Crown pastoral lease lands. The board has asked that the Government not proceed with any plans for the land in the meantime. This matter must take precedence over any decisions as to which department might administer the lands. — Yours, etc., SUE PIERCEY. September 9, 1986.
