High country

Sir, — Administration of the high country is “a very simple issue,” pontificates the Prime Minister (September 3). It is indeed. Mr Lange should reflect that for two generations the history of Molesworth has been a powerful symbol of the need to put conservation ahead of profit in the high country. Molesworth, Mangaone (East Coast), Eyre Creek (Southland) — citadels all — have now fallen together with the pastoral lease lands, to a profit-maximising corporation. Mr Lange is concerned, otherwise, about notice being taken of Land Settlement Board classifications. Yet the L.S.B. refuses to adopt Forest Service definitions of native forest which would prevent threatened clearance of large areas of regenerating bush on Crown blocks. How much notice though can the corporation afford to take of L.S.B. policies if it is to be commercially successful, and if it fails will it “privatise” its holdings to balance the books? Direct departmental control of these sensitive Crown lands is imperative. — Yours, etc., ERIC BENNETT. Wellington, September 7, 1986.
