Banks Peninsula to pay $5000 for maiden horses

The Banks Peninsula Trotting Club will this season pay a stake of $5OOO for its races for maiden horses. This is the largest amount paid by any club in New Zealand for this class of horse.
The increased stakes will apply for the club’s two full totaiisator meetings on October 11 and December 27, said the president of the club, Mr Jim Baker, and the chairman of the programme committee, Mr George Mugford, when announcing the new schedule. The level of stakes to be paid for the club’s oncourse only meeting on
Thursday, January 15, will be decided later, but it is hoped to keep it at about the same high level. “The increases include an allowance for additional subsidies expected to result from the taxation relief, which is to become effective on October 1,” said Mr Baker.
In an attempt to offset some of the additional costs imposed on owners as a result of the introduction of GST, the club will pay a fifth prize in every race.
The $5OOO stake for maiden horses represents an increase of $lOOO over the stake paid for the same class last December, Horses as-
sessed at Cl have had $llOO added to their stake, which will now be worth $5400. An additional $l2OO has been allocated to C2 horses, which will race for $5BOO, while $lOOO has been added to the race for C 3 horses, which will now compete for $6OOO. The stake for the D.B. Banks Peninsula Cup, a 2200 m invitation race, for the top pacers, has had $4OOO added to its stake. The club’s feature spring race will now be worth $14,000. Stakes for the feature races at the club’s Christmas meeting will be reviewed when the full programme comes up for approval.
