Langer takes fourth title
NZPA-Reuter Dusseldorf The defending champion, Bernhard Langer, won his fourth West German Open golf title in six years with a 15-foot birdie putt on the fifth hole of a sudden death playoff against the Australian, Rodger Davis, at Dusseldorf yesterday. Langer’s final round 67 left him tied with Davis, who carded a course record 64, on a 15-under-par 273, but the West German held on to notch his first European tour win for 12 months. Langer, who pocketed $82,300 for the win, said: “When I lost my clubs in transit from America I t thought my chance#' of wins ning again had gone; I especi-
ally missed my putter, which I got at the United States Open championship. “I opened with a 75 but my clubs turned up that night and it made all the difference in the world. I shot 65 next day, then 66. I couldn’t have won without my putter.” Davis looked set to win but three-putted the last, then saw two birdie winners lip out in the play-off. Britain’s Sandy Lyle, who closed with a 66, shared third place on 275 with the South African, Mark McNulty (67). Britain’s lan Woosnam (66) and Mark Mouland (69) shared fifth place on 276.
