Medal haul for Canty fencers
Four gold medals, two silver and four bronze, represented a healthy haul for the Canterbury team at the New Zealand inter-secondary schools fencing championships in Wellington last weekend.
Kathy Allen, of Avonside Girls’ High School, won the gold medal in the individual foil with a determined display to beat the pre-tourna-ment favourite, Waimaria Erueti, of Wellington, five hits to two.
The Canterbury foils team won the team title. The successful trio were Benoit Upton (Burnside High School), Edward Yee (Linwood High School) and Martin Taylor (Mairehau High School). Upton added a silver medal with a solid display, in the boys epee. Taylor caused a surprise by taking the bronze in the boys foil.
All other bronze medal winners in the Canterbuiy squad were attending their first national tournament. Results.—

Stephens (Canterbury) 5. Sabre: Peterson 1, A. Kell (Canterbury) 2, R. Hillock (Canterbury) 3. Also placed: A. Kitto (Canterbury) 7.
