Collisions mar start of solo yacht race

NZPA-AAP New York Two spectacular collisions caused by an unruly 500-boat spectator fleet, marred the start of the BOC-sponsored around the world solo yacht race at Newport, Rhode Island, yesterday. The American favourite, Warren Luhrs, was forced to return “Thursday’s Child” for inspection and repairs which may put him out of the race. Luhrs’ boat collided with a French entry “Ecureuil d’Aquitaine”, skippered by Titouan Lamazou, as both tried to dodge spectator craft crossing their paths. Luhrs compounded rudder

and self-steering mechanism problems by hitting unmarked, submerged cables at the entrance to the Newport boat yard, and also damaged his keel.

In the other collision, a South African, John Martin, rammed a 30-foot gaff-rigged spectator sloop as it suddenlycut across the bows of his boat ‘ Tuna Marine”.

His 60-foot yacht suffered minor damage but continued in the race after Martin was persuaded by radio that the five occupants of the spectator ’>oat had been rescued unhurt after being thrown into the water by the crash.
