Hubrich supreme in giant slalom
PA Turoa The New Zealand men’s ski champion, Marcus Hubrich, continued his winning form in the Rossignol giant slalom at Turoa yesterday. He took first place in the men’s event, to add to his victory on Saturday in the Homestyle slalom and clinch the Grimwade Cup for best combined result. His younger brother Matthias, only tenths of a second inferior to his brother in Saturday’s slalom, finished second over-all. Simon Wi Rutene, fresh from a series of wins on the South Island ski race circuit, put the pressure on Hubrich
in the first run and was leading by half a second but caught a gate in the second run and did not finish the course.
In the women’s event, Patricia Bull skied well in both runs and maintained a good lead to take first place with a total combined time of Im 57.785, ahead of runner up Lisa Powell with 2:00.42.
Beth Turnbull was third with a combined time of 2:01.88. Weather conditions at Turoa for both races were excellent and the hardpacked snow stood up well to the racing.
