Unions agree cuts needed— Tasman head
PA* Auckland ! Every union at the Kawerau mill except that representing the pulp and paper workers was reluctantly accepting that staff cuts in the long term were needed, said Tasman’s managing director, Mr Gary Mace, yesterday.
The other unions had talked to the company for some time about the need to reduce the 2000-mem-ber workforce at least 25 per cent, he said. . Of the 500 the company thought it could do without, about 100 were pulp and paper workers.
About 200 were in supervisory and administrative toles, he said.
. ? The Federation of Labour’s president, Mr Jim Knox, is expected to meet Pulp and Paper Workers’ Federation executives at Kawerau todpy. 'T guess that he will give us a call afteriihat,” said Mr Mace. ft
