N.I. badminton titles
PA Auckland The former national badminton champion, Graeme Robson, won two titles at the North Island championships on Saturday. Robson beat a fellow Aucklander, Glen Stewart, 17-14, 15-5, in the men’s singles final, and then partnered a former national doubles champion, Jacob van Seim, in a 15-12, 15-8, win over Kevin Ross (Wanganui) and Ryan Whittle (Auckland) in the men’s doubles final.
“I have won the men's singles and doubles and the mixed doubles at the New Zealand championships before but never held them all in the same year,” said Robson. "This year I want the
treble." His chances of achieving that object seem excellent.
Two other rivals for the singles titles, Phil Horne and Keirin Harrison, the present champion, will not becontesting the nationals in Christchurch next month. Linda Persson {North Shore), the national women’s champion in 1984, was the dominant player in the women’s event She also claimed two titles.
Persson beat Jay Newton (North Shore), 11-5, 11-2, in the singles final then combined with Newton to win the doubles 15-9, 15-10, against Julie Still (Otago) and Bronwen Roberts (Auckland).
