School Certificate
Sir, —I did not approve of the “pass-or-fail” assessment of School Certificate, but I am not sure if abolishing the examination is the answer. Miss Ruth Richardson’s remarks (June 10) concerning recent recommendations puzzle me. Why would an assessment from C.G.H.S. be superior to one from Akaroa Area School? Is big better than small, city better than country, or single-sex better than co-ed? The intelligence of teachers and pupils does not depend on where their school is situated. Surely pupils of similar ability, studying the same subjects, must obtain an assessment of the same value, regardless of which school they attend. — Yours, etc., B. WILSON. July 19, 1986.
