Literacy levels

Sir,—l must commend Ronald Stevens, English teacher at Hornby High School, for confirming what many people have suspected for years. The standard of literacy of pupils from primary and intermediate schools has dropped to such a level that it is time the Minister of Education stepped in. Two steps must be taken immediately: (a) Accepting Training College entrants with only primary or intermediate schools’ training, must cease immediately, and (b) re-intro-ducing a Form 2 proficiency examination which would hold back all incompetent and poorly taught pupils in the primary system. These two measures would ensure that only a small number of intelligent and welltaught pupils would then enter our high schools. People like Ronald Stevens would then be spared the anguish of dealing with these unsatisfactory illiterates. Great monetary savings would also be made by having more pupils in the primary system where teachers are paid considerably less.—Yours, etc.,

JOHN BATEMAN. Ahaura, July 22, 1986.
