Mount Vernon
Sir, — I understand that the Mount Vernon Appeal people have now paid outstanding interest to Heathcote County. Does this indicate that the park has been paid for, or is more cash needed? Possibly, the chairman of the Port Hills Appeal Committee could indicate if funds are still needed; if so, what fundraising activities are planned and is help required? Are any service clubs lnvolved in helping to raise funds and is the Mount Vernon Committee still co-opting members? Mount Vernon is an essential link in the recreational use of the Port Hills. It is on the bus route and close enough to the city for. all to enjoy, — Yours, etc., Ray Spring. June 24, 1986.
[Mr D. B. Rich, chairman, Mount Vernon Appeal Committee, replies:'“Mount Vernon Park has been purchased and is available to the public. However, some $60,000 has still to be formed to clear interest-hearing mortgages. A Mount Vernon -Park awareness week is planned from July 18 to 25. Activities will include “gold prospecting” in Mount Vernon Park off Hillsborough Terrace, on Sunday, July 20, and a family walk from the same starting point at 11.30 a.m. that day. The week ..will conclude with a mystery envelope appeal. Primary schools are involved in selling Mount Vernon badges and other fund-raising activities. We have had some assistance from service clubs, but would appreciate more Interest. Persons wishing to assist the committee, or organisations , willing- to help raise funds would be most welcome and should contact Ph. 556-180 or Sumner 6246. Donations (tax exemption allowable) may be sent to P.O. Box 1927, • Christchurch.’’]
