Govt to set up schools board
PA Wellington A secondary board of studies will be set up from next April to approve courses and recommend syllabus changes in secondary schools. The -Minister of Education, Mr Marshall, said the board would also review policies under which secondary awards are made, including School Certificate and Sixth Form Certificate.
The Education Department will service the new board at a cost of almost $2 million a year. It would include provision for in-service training of teachers in assessment techniques and publication of curriculum and assessment material.
The board would include representatives of the teaching profession, school controlling authorities, universities, employer and employee organisations, Maori and Pacific Island organisa-
tions, and the Education Department
“The School Certificate Examination Board will be disbanded, as its responsibilities for School Certificate will be taken over by the new board,” Mr Marshall told the Post Primary Teachers’ Association conference in Wellington yesterday. Legislation would be needed to establish the new administrative structure, he said.
