Rubbish collectors on strike
PA Wellington Wellington City’s rubbish collectors are on strike over an argument with the City Council over how bad the weather has to be before it is called a storm.
The argument started last Wednesday at the height of the southerly storm. Refuse collectors worked that day but returned from their rounds saying conditions were hazardous, said the assistant central district secretary of the Labourers’ Union, Mr Roger Wilkins.
Mr Wilkins said the council would not agree that Wednesday was stormy and so collectors did not report for work on Thursday.
Rubbish collections resumed throughout the city on Friday but collectors were not at work again yesterday.
“The council wanted the right to decide unilaterally what constitutes stormy weather,” Mr Wilkins said.
