Care needed on country roads

Some roads in rural Canterbury were closed yesterday and care was needed on other roads because of surface flooding or slips.

Almost all of Malvern County had surface flooding. Motorists were advised by the Automobile Association (Canterbury) to avoid using Bealey Road because of bad conditions, while the road from Lake Lyndon to Lake Coleridge was closed.

On Banks Peninsula slips blocked the road to Little Akaloa and Okains Bay until it was cleared by Akaroa County staff at 1 p.m. Some other outer Peninsula roads remained closed yesterday because of slips. The County Engineer, Mr K. A. Paulin, said there had been some heavy showers, bringing

the total rainfall to 70mm to 80mm generally, but up to 160 mm in some areas over a 30-hour period to late yesterday. In. neighbouring Wairewa County surface flooding occurred at Cooptown and Little River.

The Lewis pass road was open, but care was required, while chains were essential for vehicles taking the Porters Pass-Arthur’s Pass route between Canterbury and West Coast. Chains were also essential on the road between Fairlie and Twizel, the road between Fairlie and Lindis Pass, and between Pukaki and Mount Cook.

In Marlborough, the road between Blenheim and Kawatiri was open only to light vehicles last evening, the A.A. reported.
