PA Wellington
The successful thoroughbred sire Three Legs died at the Okawa Stud, Hastings, yesterday of a heart attack.
The Petingo stallion, New Zealand’s top first season sire in 1982-83 and leading sire over all last year, was found dead in his box about 10 a.m.
"We had a post mortem done on him,” the stud spokesman, Pat Lowry, said yesterday of the rising 14-year-old grey entire.
“He had a heart attack. There wasn’t a mark on him.
“The boys were just loading up a three-year-old filly at the time to go away. They’d just seen him. He was well and eating but when they came back ...”
Studmaster Tom Lowry, currently in England vetting sires for the Cranleigh Stud, was informed of the death yesterday along with Three Legs’ shareholders.
Three Legs raced in England and Italy, win-
ning seven races and recording seven placings from 24 starts. He stood at stud in Ireland in 1978 and 1979 before coming to New Zealand.
His first New Zealand runner, Burletta won her first race, a juvenile at Hastings in 1982, arid went on to win the Wrightson Filly of the Year title and the 1000 Guineas. He has since left the New Zealand Derby winner Jolly Jake and the 2000 Guineas winner Random Chance. Eastern Joy has had repeated success in top company winning the 1985 Castlemaine Easter Stakes and the two-year-old Shannon has a growing reputation after recent wins in Australia.
Three Legs has seven stakes winners in New Zealand and a listed hurdle winner, Ambiance, in England. He was sixth on the New Zealand sires list this season at the time of his death.
Three Legs has 41 entries in thoroughbred sales next summer.
