Birthday present for Ashburton trainer
The surprise win of the Ashburton trained Catential in the $15,000 Ambassador Travel Handicap in Brisbane on Saturday was an early birthday present for Peter Williams. Peter Williams, who trains Catential in partnership with his wife Dawn, had a birthday on Monday. Mrs Williams who accompanied the gelding to Queensland, phoned her husband on Monday to pass on birthday wishes and give a first-hand ac-
count of the upset win of the day at Doomben on Saturday. Catential’s race last Saturday was only his second in Australia. He was balloted out of another event, but his lead-up run over 1600 m sufficed in topping him off for a step up to 2200 m on Saturday. Catential left no room for second thoughts with his performance on Saturday. He travelled easily in third position to the straight, then challenged
strongly to win going away by a length and a quarter.
Coming so soon after Marlon’s Brisbane Cup victory, Catential’s win on Saturday on a firm track, one that was not expected to show him to advantage, gave Australians something more to wonder about and offered small comfort for those espousing the qualities of the home brigade in major races over a bit of ground.
