Discipline

Sir, — The pressing need in our homes and schools is not the abolition of all corporal punishment, but a determined drive for obedience, respect, honesty and reliability from young people. One child needs encouragement and understanding; another craves attention and approval; a third hates being the focus of attention and a fourth responds only to strict discipline. Children will accept that all people, from emperors to their humblest subjects, must obey laws necessary for their wellbeing. The Commandments, laws of health, food, cleanliness, road safety, etc, bring benefits when obeyed, and ills when ignored. Although, naturally, children have always probed to find the weaknesses of those in authority and delight to play on these, deep down they really appreciate strict parents and teachers, caring enough to lay down rules and to punish disobedience. The laxity of our sick society is destroying much of the sound discipline we once possessed. — Yours, etc.,
