High country leases
Sir,—l recently had the opportunity to make a day trip from Christchurch into the'
foothills of the Southern Alps. I .visited Castle Hill Reserve and wandered around the Broken River cave reserve. On the return journey I left the road at Lake Lyndon and walked up a small valley towards the Torlesse Range. Finally, on the way down Porters Pass I diverted along the old Coach Road — on foot I hasten to add. It has only required such a short and mildly energetic ramble to confirm my view that we have an incredibly beautiful area, with unique flora, very close to Christchurch. Surely the administration of such an area should not be undertaken by an economically orientated Land Development Corporation. The new Department of Conservation seems to me to be the appropriate authority to control it.—Yours, etc., MICHAEL BEAVEN. June 15, 1986.
