Prudential’s ‘man’
Sir,—Frances Adank asks whether the “Man from Prudential” is a man or a woman (June 14). I would like to enhance the reply of Mr Klap. According to the Oxford dictionary, the first meaning of “man” is “human being” collectively; second meaning is “human race”; third meaning is “human being of specified historic period.” Only the fourth meaning is “adult human male.” On whose orders do we pollute and distort our beautiful English?—Yours, etc., E. P. STECIURENKO. June 14, 1986.
