Jailed policeman apologises

PA Wellington A Christchurch policeman convicted of importing heroin has apologised to his colleagues. Wayne Malcolm Haussman, a former undercover policeman, is awaiting the result of an appeal against a 16-year prison term imposed for his part in importing heroin with a street value of more than $1 million. He had admitted the charges of importing the drug and possessing it for supply. In a letter to the editor in a recent issue of the Police Association newsletter, signed: “W. M.

Haussman, Paremoremo” he asked that the newsletter publish a “note of an apology.” “I would just like to say I am sorry to other members for any adverse effects my recent action has caused them in the course of their duty,” the letter said. “I do feel the undercover programme of the past had many faults, and initially led to my deviating from the right path, but consider myself to blame for being unable to find the courage to correct this. “To your readers, my friends and others I offer my inadequate apologies.”
