‘Tempting’ cricket offers

PA Dunedin Ken Rutherford, recently returned from the New Zealand cricket tour of Sri Lanka, Sharjah and Hong Kong, says he is “unlikely” to play for Otago next season. Rutherford, aged 20, has been approached with tempting offers by northern associations which he declined to name yesterday. But he said the chances would be 40-60 against his returning to play Shell cricket for his native province. “I would like to come

back to Otago, but at the moment it seems unlikely," said Rutherford. “I will make a decision before the end of the tour of England." The opener was an important part of Otago’s Shell Trophy-winning side last season, topping the averages with 639 runs at 53.25. The performance earned him a recall for the home test series against Australia, when he cemented selection for the recent Asian tour and the June-September tour of England.
