Lion N.Z. fourth
PA Auckland Only 46 miles separated the leader, U.B.S. Switzerland, and the fourth-placed Lion New Zealand as the Whitbread round the world yacht race fleet neared the equator on the fourth and final leg to Portsmouth. Late yesterday afternoon, in lighter airs, Drum England had improved to be second, 16 miles behind U.B.S. Switzerland.
Atlantic Privateer, three miles behind Drum, was third, while Lion New Zealand was a further 27 miles back. Smaller boats had narrowed the gap on the maxis. Rucanor Tri Star, the handicap leader for the leg, was eight miles behind Lion and seven miles ahead of Fazer Finland. The maxi Cote d’Or had slipped back to seventh place.
