Big warm-up win
Canterbury no longer has any cause for complacency in its approach to the first Rugby League Cup defence of the season, against Waikato at the Show Grounds on Thursday night. Although . Canterbury was forced to look to several new representatives because of retirements and transfers, it seemed that Waikato had suffered even more from offseason movements when thrashed by Auckland and beaten by Bay of Plenty. But on Saturday Waikato struck back to humble Northland, 62-14, in a northern zone first division fixture at
Huntly. Six minutes into the first half, Waikato rattled on four converted tries, and was ahead by 38-6 at half-time. Waikato scored 11 trie's, two each to the captain, Pihama Green, a newcomer, Paul Rangi, and Dean Haggie, a recent rugby union recruit on the wing. Scorers: Waikato 62 (P. Green two, P. Rangi two, D. Haggie two, B. Dawson, T. Nikau, N. Ramsay, B. Singer, M. Tahu tries; C. Scott nine goals) beat Northland 14 (P. Crump two, C. Stone tries; T. Mackie goal).
